Christie’s Modern & Contemporary Art Department to present “The Season of Masterpieces,” with Asia previews on the following dates: Beijing October 20-21, Shanghai October 24-25, and Taipei November 7-8.
Hong Kong – On December 2 and 3, Christie’s will present a curated selection of masterworks by artists from around the globe, spanning across eras, genres, mediums, and cultures.
These include previously announced highlights by artists including Zao Wou-Ki, Zhang Xiaogang, Andy Warhol, and Yayoi Kusama, as well as important works by leading abstract artists, a significant group of Southeast Asian artworks, and outstanding masterpieces by the Chinese-French painter Sanyu; and Filipino cubist and painter Vicente Silva Manansala.
Following the auction records set by Sanyu’s Five Nudes and White Chrysanthemum in a Blue and White Jardiniere over the past two seasons, Christie’s continues to be the market leader for Sanyu. This season we are proud to present Chrysanthèmes roses dans une corbeille (Pink Chrysanthemum in a Basket) (Estimate: HK$68,000,000–98,000,000/US$8,900,000–12,000,000), an impressive floral still-life by the artist.
Painted in 1931, Pink Chrysanthemums in a Basket is an exceptional example of Sanyu’s floral paintings from the 30s, demonstrating the artist’s unique approach to composition and space. Using simple colors and a blend of stylization and realism, Sanyu utilized the Western medium of oil and canvas to capture a sense of Chinese aesthetics in his paintings of flowers. Pink Chrysanthemums in a Basket, with its unique vertical composition and delicately etched details, showcases the artist’s dedication to achieving a refined elegance in his work.
Christie’s is located on the 22nd Floor, Alexandra House 18 Chater Road, Central Hong Kong. For more information e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
