“Ushering in a Great Year” is the theme of Singapore’s Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2020, which will run until 22 February 2020, offering a splendid array of activities for young and old to immerse themselves in the festive celebrations, and boundless opportunities to experience the glamour of Chinese culture and traditions.
Here are some of the events:
- Chinatown Chinese New Year Countdown Party (24 January)
Usher in the Year of the Rat with live performances and a medley of festive songs, skits, and interactive games, as the countdown party culminates with rousing firecrackers and stunning fireworks.
- Festive Street Bazaar (Until 24 January)
The bustling festive markets offer visitors a great variety of traditional New Year goodies, from foods to potted plants and clothing. Don’t miss out on the mouth-watering delicacies for Chinese New Year.
- Nightly Stage Shows (Until 24 January)
Be entertained by the lively and vibrant stage performances featuring both local and overseas artists at Kreta Ayer Square during the Chinatown Chinese New Year celebrations.
- Street Light-Up (4 to 22 February)
The streets of Chinatown will be illuminated for 7 weeks with artwork that includes traditional and modern designs. The light-up will feature handmade sculptured lanterns of the Rat and the other 11 Chinese Zodiac animals, as well as gold coins, flowers, and traditional greetings.
- River Hongbao 2020
Celebrate Lunar New Year with your friends and family at the largest, most anticipated Lunar New Year event of the year – River Hongbao 2020. The iconic event will be held at The Float @ Marina Bay, until 1 February, showcasing traditions of Singapore’s Lunar New Year celebrations for locals and tourists alike.
A central part of Singapore’s festive calendar every year since 1987, the lively festival offers a special Chinese cultural experience, from stunning fireworks and interactive exhibits to giant lanterns. It has become one of River Hongbao’s key attractions year after year.
Set yourself up for the perfect photo opportunity with more than 20 dazzling lantern pieces, with the largest lantern set stretching over 50m long, and the tallest lantern up to 18m high.
This year, the River Hongbao exhibition, titled “Prosperity in Packets, Hongbao Giving in Chinese Culture”, traces the history and development of the Lunar New Year tradition of red packet gifting. Visitors can explore the evolving aesthetics and design of red packets through a curated selection of red packet collections from private collectors and companies.
River Hongbao 2020 is also packed with exciting fringe activities, ranging from over 20 thrilling rides and games, to stage performances and more, ensuring your night will be filled with amusement and entertainment. Make sure to head over to the numerous food stalls for a taste of more than 40 different selections of delectable foods.
If you love fireworks, you’ll love the Fireworks Spectacular! With a Local Twist a series of magnificent fireworks that will light up the skies of the Marina Bay waterfront every night from 23 January to 1 February 2020.
